One-Act Horror Fest Seeks Submissions

Submissions are now being accepted for the Shortened Attention Span Horror Festival, which will present many scary one-act plays over three weekends this fall.

The fall event will present between 15 and 20 plays running five to 30 minutes each. Each week the audience will select a favorite, and the three winning plays will be staged in the 199-seat Players Theatre on Halloween.

In June, the Players Theatre produced the first Shortened Attention Span Festival, presenting 20 plays, each under 20 minutes, by 18 different authors during the four-week event.

Plays must be no more than 30 pages with either a horror or Halloween theme. There is a $10 submission fee. Authors of plays accepted for presentation will be notified by August 18. Submit by Aug. 11 to:

Highwire Theatre Testing The Line New Play competition

Highwire Theatre is now accepting submissions for their 2008 Testing the Line Competition. All entries will be read and reviewed by a panel of NYC theater professionals (playwrights, directors, actors, etc.) Finalists will have a workshop and staged reading with professional actors and directors in Summer 2008. The winner will receive $300 and a fully-mounted production as part of Highwire's season. Entries must be full-length, straight plays. One-Acts, musicals and adaptations will not be accepted. Scripts must be unpublished and original with no production history; workshops and readings are allowed. Highwire Theatre is committed to providing our audience with the context and inspiration to reevaluate and develop new perspectives on assumed truths of the human experience. To that end, we dedicate each season to the exploration of one theme across genre, period, and structure. And through this program, we hope to introduce emerging artists to new audiences and friends. Authors of winning plays agree to the following:
To give Pan Theater (and/or its direct successors) the right to produce/stage the plays for an unlimited number of productions for a ten year period. Plays may be added to the Pan Theater revue/repertory series.
Pan Theater Agrees:Pan Theater will pay winning authors $30 per play that wins.
Authors will be entitled to an author comp ticket during the run of their play. This is for play authors only.

Suggestions for submissions:
Have the play read by actors before submitting
Provide some background detail for the actors
All submissions should include a synopsis and character outlinesLimit the number of actors to six at most
The play should be appropriate for a minimalist production style
Review our troupe photo pages- these are the people that will be cast in the plays.

Notes from the winning submissions for 2006:
Only one winning play was over ten pages in length
No play with more than six characters was chosen as a festival winner
Plays requiring extensive props and scenery were not chosen!

Each play could be easily summarized in one sentence
Authors followed submission guidelines
Winning plays had strong central relationships

2008 P73 Playwriting Fellowship

 The P73 Playwriting Fellowship provides year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support. The P73 Fellowship is best suited to writers who have concrete and reasonable goals that can be achieved through the resources provided by Page 73. These goals may include, but are not limited to, specific artistic objectives that relate to the development of a new play and assistance in building relationships within the New York City theater community. Please note that funds from the P73 Playwriting Fellowship do not cover full-scale productions under an Actors' Equity Showcase Contract, LOA or an Actors' Equity Mini-Contract.

 At the start of his or her fellowship year, the fellow either must have clearly articulated a proposed project in his or her application or must have provided the first few pages of the new play. During the fellowship year, the fellow receives a cash stipend of $2,000; additional. Additional funds of $8,000 are ear-marked to cover expenses for the grantee's research, workshop and reading presentations and ; such additional funds are used for fees for collaborating artists. The fellowship year includes at least one public presentation of the new play. Page 73 also supports the writer by helping the fellow identify collaborators, such as directors, designers, actors and dramaturgs, for the project.

 The 2008 P73 Playwriting Fellow will be associated with Page 73 from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008. After being selected, he or she will work with Page 73's producing directors to develop a plan for the year and establish a timeline for the development and production work to be done on the new play. The fellow is expected to be present in New York City from time to time to fully engage in the opportunities that the fellowship provides.

 Past fellows include Kirsten Greenidge, Quiara Alegría Hudes and Jason Grote. The 2007 P73 Playwriting Fellow is Krista Knight.

Writing for solo performance

Here's a list of tips to guiide the writer/performer to creating a successful solo piece:

1. If you want to convey an idea, it is usually more effective to asking questions as a character to arrive at that idea instead of just stating it. This will engage the audience and allow them to explore and journey with the character, which leads to a more active situation with the audience.

2. Keep the imagery strong in your prose but don't fall into the trap of excessive use of adjectives.

3. Get the piece on it's feet as soon as possible. Even if the text is not finished, improvising situations through acting rather than writing may lead you to discover hidden gems in your piece, or at the very least keep you active, and therefore the piece active.

4. Don't forget the conflict. Conflict makes drama possible. Solo pieces very easily can turn into speeches that has the performer talking to the audience instead of connecting to them.

5. Explore physical actions. Sometimes a specific physical actions can convey more than mere words can.

Brown Couch Theatre Company

We are now accepting ten-minute plays for our fifth annual festival!

We're keeping it simple this year. Actors and a couch. That's right, every play must be set on, around or near a brown couch.

You can place the couch wherever you like (a living room, a hotel lobby, the front porch of the Sigma Chi house), and you can also bring in one additional hand prop (anything that an actor can carry on and off the stage), but that's all. The rest of the scene will be created with lights and sound...and, you know, acting.

As for the scripts themselves...they should be in Microsoft Word format and should include a title page and a character/setting breakdown page. Then the script, which should be no longer than 10 pages. We'll be accepting one script from each playwright, so take your time and make sure it's your best work!

Action Theatre Project play submission

We are a young reading series interested in risk-taking, action-oriented theater. ATP likes plays with strong plots that are driven by characters with strong points of view and brave emotions. Our readings often feature live music or DJs and are always booked under a single theme. Past themes include "Dysfunction," "Learning Curves," "Eerie Things," and "Solo" shows. To date we have produced six events, all at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn. (Our under-construction website, www.actiontheaterproject.org, will soon have details on all of these past events.)

This May, Action Theater will celebrate its First Birthday, and to celebrate, we are looking for brand new plays and writers to contribute to the series. We are looking for self-contained theater pieces, between 15-20 minutes in length. Plays should be sent as Word documents or PDFs; text should be in a readable, reasonably sized font (e.g. Times New Roman, 12 pt). A brief cover letter including your name, phone number, and email address should be included in your email. Special attention will be given to plays with birthday/anniversary/themes of aging, but honestly: we will read whatever you send us. And we will read everything.

Plays selected will be produced either as part of May's Action Theater or as part of an upcoming event. Note that while we cannot compensate you monetarily (the series is done on a completely volunteer basis), we will offer support throughout all stages of the production process, put your name on some fancily-designed postcards, and shout your praises throughout our community network of actors, writers, directors, and theatergoers. Writers in the New York area who are able to attend rehearsals and the reading will most benefit from the process -- we will welcome your input.
