Riverside Theatre invites playwrights to submit monologues for performance in Walking the Wire: Monologues at Riverside . This ninth annual evening of original work features monologues of ten minutes or less by both established and up-and-coming playwrights. The focus for this season’s monologues is
The Midwest : Beyond the Corn. Submissions must be postmarked September 1, 2007; final selections will be announced no later than October 29. The monologues will be performed February 29-March 2 at Riverside Theatre.

Submission Guidelines

Riverside Theatre is seeking submissions from writers with a Midwestern experience/perspective; non-Midwestern writers with an informed perspective about the Midwest are welcome to submit.

Up to two submissions per author of
original, unpublished and unproduced monologues (may be dramatic character or personal memoir)
less than ten minutes length may be submitted. Please read it aloud to be certain and include the approximate performance time on your submission; all lengths of up to ten minutes will be considered, with the objective of choosing monologues of varying lengths).
The copy must be easy to read: double spaced in a minimum 12 pt. font, and should include the playwright's name, mailing address, email address, and phone number.

Simple is best. Since
"Walking the Wire" typically includes a large number of monologues, it is important that each one require as little production as possible; set-pieces, props, or effects needing set-up, strike, or special technical support may disqualify an otherwise excellent submission.

The POSTMARK deadline for submissions is Saturday, September 1, 2007. Playwrights selected for Walking the Wire will be notified no later than October 29, and also posted on Riverside Theatre’s website, www.riversidetheatre.org .

Writers will be credited in all marketing and playbill materials; no royalties will be paid for performance. Monologues will be independently rehearsed until the week of the performance when the show will rehearse at Riverside Theatre. Area playwrights may perform their own work, or include the name of an actor interested in performing the monologue, although neither is required. Walking the Wire will be produced February 29-March 2, 2008.

The theme of this year's festival is "FAKING IT".

Submission Guidelines:

* Only unproduced works will be accepted.
* Plays must have a female or other underrepresented minority as the
protagonist.
* Plays that have had staged readings are eligible.
* No adaptations, musicals, or children's plays.
* Cast size maximum: 5.
* Length: 25 minutes maximum, no minimum.
* Settings should be simple or suggested.
* Playwrights may make multiple submissions.
* Please do not submit works that have been previously submitted.
* Scripts must be postmarked by August 24, 2007.

One-Act Horror fest seeks submissions

One-Act Horror Fest Seeks Submissions

Submissions are now being accepted for the Shortened Attention Span Horror Festival, which will present many scary one-act plays over three weekends this fall.

The fall event will present between 15 and 20 plays running five to 30 minutes each. Each week the audience will select a favorite, and the three winning plays will be staged in the 199-seat Players Theatre on Halloween.

In June, the Players Theatre produced the first Shortened Attention Span Festival, presenting 20 plays, each under 20 minutes, by 18 different authors during the four-week event.

Plays must be no more than 30 pages with either a horror or Halloween theme. There is a $10 submission fee. Authors of plays accepted for presentation will be notified by August 18. Submit by Aug. 11 to:

Highwire Theatre Testing The Line New Play competition

Highwire Theatre is now accepting submissions for their 2008 Testing the Line Competition. All entries will be read and reviewed by a panel of NYC theater professionals (playwrights, directors, actors, etc.) Finalists will have a workshop and staged reading with professional actors and directors in Summer 2008.  The P73 Playwriting Fellowship provides year-long comprehensive support to one early-career playwright who has received neither wide public recognition nor substantial production opportunities in New York City. Through this program, Page 73 provides artistic and financial resources to one emerging playwright as he or she develops a new play that has not received substantial prior development support. The P73 Fellowship is best suited to writers who have concrete and reasonable goals that can be achieved through the resources provided by Page 73. These goals may include, but are not limited to, specific artistic objectives that relate to the development of a new play and assistance in building relationships within the New York City theater community. Please note that funds from the P73 Playwriting Fellowship do not cover full-scale productions under an Actors' Equity Showcase Contract, LOA or an Actors' Equity Mini-Contract.

 At the start of his or her fellowship year, the fellow either must have clearly articulated a proposed project in his or her application or must have provided the first few pages of the new play. During the fellowship year, the fellow receives a cash stipend of $2,000; additional. Additional funds of $8,000 are ear-marked to cover expenses for the grantee's research, workshop and reading presentations and ; such additional funds are used for fees for collaborating artists. The fellowship year includes at least one public presentation of the new play. Page 73 also supports the writer by helping the fellow identify collaborators, such as directors, designers, actors and dramaturgs, for the project.

 The 2008 P73 Playwriting Fellow will be associated with Page 73 from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2008. After being selected, he or she will work with Page 73's producing directors to develop a plan for the year and establish a timeline for the development and production work to be done on the new play. The fellow is expected to be present in New York City from time to time to fully engage in the opportunities that the fellowship provides.

 Past fellows include Kirsten Greenidge, Quiara Alegría Hudes and Jason Grote. The 2007 P73 Playwriting Fellow is Krista Knight.

Brown Couch Theatre Company

We are now accepting ten-minute plays for our fifth annual festival!

We're keeping it simple this year. Actors and a couch. That's right, every play must be set on, around or near a brown couch.

You can place the couch wherever you like (a living room, a hotel lobby, the front porch of the Sigma Chi house), and you can also bring in one additional hand prop (anything that an actor can carry on and off the stage), but that's all. The rest of the scene will be created with lights and sound...and, you know, acting.

As for the scripts themselves...they should be in Microsoft Word format and should include a title page and a character/setting breakdown page. Then the script, which should be no longer than 10 pages. We'll be accepting one script from each playwright, so take your time and make sure it's your best work!

Action Theatre Project play submission

We are a young reading series interested in risk-taking, action-oriented theater. ATP likes plays with strong plots that are driven by characters with strong points of view and brave emotions. Our readings often feature live music or DJs and are always booked under a single theme. Past themes include "Dysfunction," "Learning Curves," "Eerie Things," and "Solo" shows. To date we have produced six events, all at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn. (Our under-construction website, www.actiontheaterproject.org, will soon have details on all of these past events.)

This May, Action Theater will celebrate its First Birthday, and to celebrate, we are looking for brand new plays and writers to contribute to the series. We are looking for self-contained theater pieces, between 15-20 minutes in length. Plays should be sent as Word documents or PDFs; text should be in a readable, reasonably sized font (e.g. Times New Roman, 12 pt). A brief cover letter including your name, phone number, and email address should be included in your email. Special attention will be given to plays with birthday/anniversary/themes of aging, but honestly: we will read whatever you send us. And we will read everything.

Plays selected will be produced either as part of May's Action Theater or as part of an upcoming event. Note that while we cannot compensate you monetarily (the series is done on a completely volunteer basis), we will offer support throughout all stages of the production process, put your name on some fancily-designed postcards, and shout your praises throughout our community network of actors, writers, directors, and theatergoers. Writers in the New York area who are able to attend rehearsals and the reading will most benefit from the process -- we will welcome your input.

DrekFest: Are you good enough to be bad? Stage Left’s First National Contest for the Worst Ten-Minute Play

ABOUT THE CONTEST:
Welcome to DrekFest: Stage Left’s first ever national search for the worst ten-minute play. DrekFest is on a mission to expose bad writing for what it really is: damn funny.DrekFest is also on a mission to expose the new play development process for what it can be: pretty damn ridiculous.
For clarity’s sake, we are not out to make fun of writers! The aims of this contest are to find the worst ten-minute play and to spoof the development process.
We are now accepting submissions for terrible ten-minute plays. Of these, four finalists will be performed on Tuesday, June 26 th, 2007 at the Chicago Cultural Center’s Studio Theatre. One of these will be chosen Worst Play by the audience in attendance.
Cash prizes will be given for a number of categories. In addition to Worst Play, other prizes awarded by our panel of adjudicators will include Worst Title, Worst Opening Line, Worst Stage Direction, Worst Character Name, and possibly others.
As this is a devo-process spoof, all plays will be performed as staged readings with minimal or no tech, and all stage directions will be read aloud. When the performances are complete, the writers will join the adjudicators onstage for a mock-critique (safe, and all in good fun!), during which the awards will be given.
DrekFest will be presented in conjunction with LeapFest 4, Stage Left’s annual festival of new, socio-political plays.

ABOUT STAGE LEFT:
Stage Left Theatre is a 25-year-old, off-loop, Chicago theatre with a mission to develop and produce plays that raise debate and challenge perspectives on political and social issues. Operating out of a 50-seat, storefront theatre in Chicago’s vibrant Wrigleyville neighborhood, Stage Left has become a regional center for the development of new plays. The theatre’s new play development arm is Downstage Left, a multi-tiered program giving emerging and established playwrights the tools they need to bring a play from conception to production.

ABOUT LEAPFEST:

To that end, every year five new plays are given three weeks of rehearsal and presented as workshop productions in rotating repertory over a three week festival period. Seven of the sixteen LeapFest plays have gone onto world premiere productions here in Chicago; two have been published; and two have received the Jeff Citation, Chicago highest theatrical honor, for Best New Work.

Green Light Productions call for submissions by women playwrights

Green Light Productions, a non-profit theatre company dedicated to creating new and exciting opportunities for women theatre artists, is presently seeking submission for GLO- a production of one-act plays to be performed during the summer of 2007 at Columbia University.

We are very interested in having our playwrights involved in the production of their work. Playwrights are afforded the opportunity to not only have a production of their play but are also invited to all casting sessions, production meetings and rehearsals. Green Light encourages playwrights to have access to all aspects of the production. We believe that a production of this ability provides a valuable professional experience and is a great opportunity for playwrights to collaborate with directors, actors, designers and producers.
